Hey MFA, what’s up with that?

During my four years of undergrad at Emmanuel College, I spent many late nights walking to and from the MFA green e line stop to go on adventures throughout the city. On my late night walks back to my dorm after a fun concert or night out with friends, I’d walk down Museum Road and Fenway, passing the Museum of Fine Arts. Each time I’d walk by, I would pass these statues of large baby heads, and a man balancing on the archway leading to the MFA parking lot, confused by what their purpose or meaning could be, never quite coming up with an answer.

Last week after one of my night classes, my parents and I went out to dinner in the city and on our walk to the restaurant, passed these statues infamous to my undergraduate experience. I decided to get their thoughts on the statues.

When looking at the large statues of babydoll heads that sit on each side of the entrance to the MFA on Fenway, my mom, Stacey Dunphy, referred to them as,

“A little creepy. Maybe suggests that we should start thinking about/be introduced to art at an early age.”

When looking at the man balancing on top of the metal archway of the MFA parking lot, my dad, John Dunphy, said,

“An appreciation for the arts is a balancing act as not everyone will appreciate every item created. An artist is always walking a tightrope between expressing themselves while wondering if people will accept the work created.”

When thinking about their responses, I feel they are both far more profound and observant and profound than I ever had ever thought of when looking at these pieces. To hear others opinions on something that became such a staple during my undergraduate career was not only a fun walk down memory lane, it gave me some new perspectives to think about on something from my past.
